The F-22 and F-35 are very different animals. They compliment each other. One does not replace the other. The F-22 was concieved in 1980 as a means of penetrating the SAM belts on the central front in Europe and engaging Warsaw Pact Su-27's, MiG-29's and Mainstay AWACS aircraft behind enemy lines. F-117's would then follow up to destroy the SAM sites leaving the A-10 and F-16 free to operate over the battlefield. In this the F-22 was to replace the F-15C/D, which was totally inadequate for this mission. In 1990 this requirement disappeared, but we kept going with the F-22 anyway. The F-35 was concieved in the early 1990's to replace the A-10 and F-16 for the Air Force and the F/A-18A/B/C/D and AV-8B for the Navy and Marines as a tactical fighter. Unlike the F-22 which was concieved ONLY for the counter-air mission over hostile airspace the F-35 is a multi-role fighter capable of fulfilling a wide range of battlefield roles. It does not do the same job as the F-22 so there is no reason to try and compare the two.
