For Hollow Knight on the Nintendo Switch, a GameFAQs message board topic titled 'Do I need to finish Path of Pain?' I have finished Path of Pain. It took me around 10 hours. I did not use Dashmaster. I used a controller. My brain couldn't comprehend using a keyboard. I believe in you. I know you can conquer this. And, if you're up for waiting, I'm making a guide to the Path of Pain.

Introduction

Many speedruns of Hollow Knight are done on previous patches of the game because important skips and glitches have been added and removed over time. That being said, you are never required to run on the most optimal patch, and many runs can be done on current patch if that's what you want to use.

Most speedruns are done on 1.2.2.1 for No Major Glitches, 1.1.1.8 for No Load Dependent Glitches or 1.0.2.8 for All Glitches, but it can vary. If you're unsure, check what patch the run you're following uses or ask in the Hollow Knight discord.

Downpatching for GoG

Downpatching for GoG is very simple.

1) In GoG Galaxy, under Hollow Knight, select Manage Installation->Configure...

2) Make sure that Auto-updates is turned off.

3) Select whichever Hollow Knight version you need:

1.4.3.2 - Current patch

1.4.2.4 - Godmaster release patch, used for Pantheon All Bindings ILs

1.2.2.1 - Grimm Troupe final patch, used for most No Major Glitches categories

1.1.1.8 - Hidden Dreams final patch, used for most No Load Dependent Glitches categories

1.0.2.8 - Used for most All Glitches Categories

These are the only patches currently available directly through GoG, but they cover almost every category.

4) Your game will be automatically updated to the chosen patch.

Downpatching for Steam

There are two options for downpatching through Steam. The first option is to patch Steam to re-enable the old method of downpatching through Steam's console. The second option is to download a separate tool called DepotDownloader, but this tool is awkward to use and has some dependencies. This is why patching Steam should be the first method you try.

Patching Steam

1) You need to download the Steam patcher here.

2) Launch the downloaded executable to patch Steam. You'll need to do this again every time you restart your computer or Steam and want to downpatch.

3) Navigate to the Steam console by pressing Win+R and typing 'steam://nav/console'.

4) Enter the following command depending on the patch you want to download:

1.4.2.4 - Godmaster release patch, used for Pantheon All Bindings ILs
Command: 'download_depot 367520 367521 7281172781181458959'

1.2.2.1 - Grimm Troupe final patch, used for most No Major Glitches categories
Command: 'download_depot 367520 367521 648876203478229944'

1.1.1.8 - Hidden Dreams final patch
Command: 'download_depot 367520 367521 3452389063277773009'

1.1.1.4 - Hidden Dreams release patch, used for 100% All Glitches
Command: 'download_depot 367520 367521 4098313936262429664'

1.0.2.8 - Used for most All Glitches Categories
Command: 'download_depot 367520 367521 6521580788679328160'

These are the commands for the most useful patches, on Windows only. A full list for every patch including IDs for Mac and Linux can be found here.

5) Be patient on the download. When it's finished a 'Depot download complete' message will appear in the console and you can move onto the Installation section.

DepotDownloader Setup

The next method outlined below also has a video guide made by Verulean. I'd recommend watching that guide alongside reading this one:

1) You need to acquire .NET Core from Microsoft's website here, make sure to download the current recommended build for your operating system (Windows x64 for most users, but please check this).

2) Launch the downloaded executable and follow the instructions to install .NET

If you're still running Windows 7 you'll need an additional update from Microsoft's website here.

3) Download the DepotDownloader tool from GitHub here. Find whatever the latest release is and make sure to use the first download link, not the source code.

4) Move the .zip to somewhere you'll remember and extract it (WinRAR and 7-Zip are free tools that can extract .zip files)

Using DepotDownloader

Where is path of pain

1) In the extracted DepotDownloader folder bring up the command line at that location by typing 'cmd.exe' into the address bar or by Shift + Right-clicking and selecting 'Open PowerShell window here'.

2) Now you can enter the commands to download the downpatched files for whichever Hollow Knight version you need. The first thing we need is the manifest ID for the patch you want to download.

Listed below are the manifest IDs for the most useful patches, on Windows only. A full list for every patch including IDs for Mac and Linux can be found here.

1.4.2.4 - Godmaster release patch, used for Pantheon All Bindings ILs
Manifest ID: 7281172781181458959

1.2.2.1 - Grimm Troupe final patch, used for most No Major Glitches categories
Manifest ID: 648876203478229944

1.1.1.8 - Hidden Dreams final patch, used for most No Load Dependent Glitches categories
Manifest ID: 3452389063277773009

1.1.1.4 - Hidden Dreams release patch, used for 100% All Glitches
Manifest ID: 4098313936262429664

1.0.2.8 - Used for most All Glitches Categories
Manifest ID: 6521580788679328160

3) Take this number and replace <manifest> in the following command as well as replacing <username> and <password> with your steam account's details.

dotnet DepotDownloader.dll -app 367520 -depot 367521 -manifest <manifest> -username <username> -password <password>

Pasting your complete command in command line and hitting enter should begin the download. If you have Steam Guard active you will be prompted for your code. Here's an example of me using the code to download patch 1.2.2.1 (manifest ID 648876203478229944).

You will be able to check progress as the patch downloads. Be patient as it will take longer than a normal Steam download.

Installing

If you used the patching Steam method, the old patch files will be in your Steam install folder under 'SteamSteamAppscontentapp_367520' and inside another folder.

If you used the DepotDownloader method, the old patch files you downloaded can be found in the 'depots' folder inside a few other folders.

See

The important files here are 'hollow_knight.exe' and the entire 'hollow_knight_Data' folder.

If you only want a downpatched version of Hollow Knight installed, you can delete the files in your current Steam install and copy these files there instead. However, there is an easy way to have multiple versions of Hollow Knight installed that I'll outline below.

Multiple Installed Patches

1) Create a folder anywhere you like and name it something that'll remind you it contains your downpatched Hollow Knight version. I created a folder named 1221 in the same location that I downloaded DepotDownloader to. Copy the old patch files here.

2) Create a new text document in this folder titled 'steam_appid' and in that document copy only the number '367520'. If you have file name extensions showing, the name of document will be 'steam_appid.txt', if you don't you'll only see 'steam_appid'.

3) Optional: Add this install to Steam as a Non-Steam Game so that you can launch it directly through Steam whenever you want.

Save Files

Path of pain walkthrough

Saves files are shared across every Hollow Knight installation, regardless of the patch. These files are located at 'C:UsersyournameAppDataLocalLowTeam CherryHollow Knight'.

Launching a current patch save with an older patch version of Hollow Knight can corrupt that save file. If you want to protect your casual save file, you can make a backup of the files in the location specified above.

Deleting Windows Registry

Some people have issues with their game after downpatching from current patch to an older patch. These might include the game crashing or not accepting inputs when sitting at benches, quitting out or some other interactions. If you have weird issues like this, deleting Team Cherry's folder in your Registry might help.

1) Press the Windows button and R at the same to time to bring up the Run command line, enter 'regedit' and press enter.

2) Navigate to 'ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareTeam Cherry' and delete that folder.

White Palace Walkthrough

Getting into the White Palace

The journey continues as players will set forth into the White Palace. And to do this, you'll need to enter the Dream World by dream nailing the corpse of a knight at the Palace Grounds which is located at the Ancient Basin. However, you'll need to acquire the Awoken Dream Nail to enter.

Path Of Pain Hollow Knight Location Within

To acquire the Awoken Dream Nail, you'll have to collect 1,800 Essence from defeating Warrior Dreams, dream bosses variants, and by extracting a few Essence from Whispering Root Trees. Once you have the sufficient amount, head back to Seer and speak to it to upgrade the Dream Nail into the Awoken Dream Nail - upon upgrading it, you can head back to the Palace Grounds at the Ancient Basin and dream nail the knight with the Awoken Dream Nail which will respectively take you into the White Palace via the Dream World.

The White Palace

The White Palace is a difficult area that requires precise platforming and patience. It has three main sections that have Benches in between each one, and each section has a lever that you'll have to reach in order to gain access into the next section. Upon entering, you'll find a bench that you can sit on to rest, and not far from it is a lift but the gates around it are locked - continue heading east from the first bench until you reach a mini-arena where you'll face 1x Kingsmould, you'll have to defeat it for the gates to re-open.

After killing it, exit to the right side of the gate, climb up, then head left where you'll find a lever. Hit it then retrace your steps back to where the locked gates were. Hop onto the platform which will take you up to a higher level that has spikes on a few platforms, simply follow the path until you reach the entrance that will lead you into the second section.

Upon entering the second section, climb up the passageway where you'll hear bugs that are talking. These are the Royal Retainers, they are weak and can be killed with just one strike with The Nail. From here, you'll want to reach the top right corner of the section and into the next segment where you'll find the lever. However, It is blocked by the gates and you'll have to continue heading east where you'll come across a room that has circular saw blades moving horizontally.

Knight

Once you've made it across, you'll find yourself in another room that has the same circular saw blades, only this time, it is moving vertically. In order to reach the top, you'll have to simultaneously climb up the wall, then dash towards the other end to avoid getting hit by the blades, just be careful when you're about midway to the top since you'll come across a wall that has spikes and the movement of the saw blades will be different. To get to the top, you'll have to cling onto the wall then double jump in between the blades to avoid getting hit - upon reaching the top, head west towards the next segment where you'll find more saw blades surrounding the room.

Now, timing and precision are important to avoid getting hit by the blades and the spikes that you'll have to pass through. You'll have to head at the bottom part of the room where you'll come across a spiked area to work your way around to reach the west side of the room. Upon reaching the west side, you should find the exit that will take you into the next room where you'll find a lever at the bottom part. You'll have to do some platforming again while heading down to avoid getting hit by the blades.

Upon reaching the bottom, you'll encounter 2x Royal Retainer and a lever that unlocks the gates of the main switch for the lift. Hit the switch, then continue to your left where you'll find yourself back to where the main switch is, flip the lever then head back outside and head to the southwestern side of the room to reach the second lever to open the gates for the lift. You'll come across yet another platforming section that have circular saw blades, simply follow the path via the platforms until you reach the second main switch. Flip it then continue following the path that will take you back to the lift, ride it to reach the third section of the palace.

For the third section, you'll find yourself in a room that has circular saw blades and multiple Wingmould enemies. These beings cannot be killed and the only way to get through it is either by avoiding it or by hitting it with The Nail which will cause its body to disperse for a short while before it reforms its shell. You'll find a bench that you can use before entering the next portion at the top.

The next portion will be a long path that you'll have to go through in order to reach the switch that unlocks a gate. And you'll have to pass through more circular saw blades and spiked metals that emerge from walls, ceilings, and platforms. Simply follow the path and just keep heading to the top until you reach the throne room of The Pale King.

Upon arriving at the throne room, you'll find the corpse of The Pale King, hit its corpse a few times the other half of the Kingsoul charm gets knocked out from the corpse. Collect the other half to form the Kingsoul charm then head back to The Abyss.

The Birthplace

Once you've acquired the Kingsoul charm, travel back to the bottom of The Abyss. But before heading into the bottom, make sure to equip the Kingsoul charm. Now, head to the west bottom part of The Abyss where you'll notice the ground will start to shake and then open up a path that will take you further into the abyss. You'll encounter more Siblings as you traverse the area.

Path Of Pain Hollow Knight Location Code

Simply head to the bottom part then go east until you reach the end where you'll find a large black broken egg. Strike it with the Awoken Dream Nail to enter the birthplace and use the platforms to reach the top where you'll find another Hollow Knight - a cutscene will then follow and the Kingsoul charm will change into the Void Heart charm. Up next, is the Temple of the Black Egg.
